This type of teaching focuses on teaching French for specific needs within a limited time, according to the diversity of target audiences.

🎓 Parcours historique et méthodologique du FOS

The FOS has its roots in 1920s military French, with manuals aimed A specialized lexicon for indigenous soldiers. Progressively, it evolved towards specialized, instrumental, and then functional French, adapting to political and economic contexts.

Instrumental French focuses on reading specialized texts, while functional French aims for alignment between pedagogical objectives and learner needs. Various pedagogical models emphasize the importance of a flexible approach. focused on real-world needs and situations. The decline of functional French has given way to FOS, which seeks to precisely meet the expectations of diverse audiences.

🌍 Profil des publics de FOS

FOS audiences include migrant workers, professionals, students to very different needs. They share often limited learning time but a strong motivation linked to the immediate profitability of their learning.

Language needs are analyzed into psycho-affective, linguistic, and socio-cultural components, while the identification of needs requires consideration of individual factors and the institutions involved.

Skills to develop include linguistic competence (lexical, grammatical, phonological, orthographic), sociolinguistic competence (politeness, registers, dialects), and pragmatic competence (discourse organization, language functions).

💻 Élaboration des enseignements du FOS

The development of FOS courses follows a multi-step process: needs and demand analysis, data collection, pedagogical choices, evaluation. Taking into account the specific context, authentic resources, and the application of varied approaches (language action situations, modular approach, simulation) are essential to guarantee effectiveness.

Several experiments in France and abroad illustrate these approaches, as well as the limitations encountered: lack of teacher training, difficulties accessing specialized documents, etc.

The contributions of ICT in teaching French for Specific Purposes are numerous, notably autonomy and individualization of learning, easier access to information, mediation, as well as the use of multimedia resources!

🌐 Vers une approche collaborative de FOS à distance

Traditionally, ESP teaching follows a face-to-face transmissive model or a behaviorist model. The collaborative approach, based on constructivism, conversely proposes a learner-centered, dynamic, and social learning experience.

Collaborative learning requires organization into virtual communities of learners and teachers, promoting exchanges, knowledge sharing, multimodal interactions (forums, chat, video conferences).

The key conditions are motivation, active participation, cohesion, and a versatile tutoring role played by a facilitator—acting as a guide, moderator, evaluator, or technician. Good tutor training is necessary to master these aspects.

🌐 La création du site FOS.COM

Faced with the scarcity of online resources dedicated to FOS, the FOS.COM website was designed to offer resources, training, and a collaborative space intended for teachers, researchers, and learners.

Organized into static sections (audience profile, history, educational resources) and dynamic sections (forums, collaborative space, educational space via the Moodle platform), this site implements a teaching project integrating ICT.

It was quickly referenced by major online search engines and educational resources. A team of teachers specializing in French as a Foreign Language (FLE), initiated via the site, collaborated to prepare online courses, even though contractual and recognition difficulties remain to be overcome.

📚 Étude de cas : La formation collaborative du français des affaires sur FOS.COM

The collaborative online business French training for Egyptian students aims to develop knowledge and skills through four main activities: collaborative work on three authentic projects, thematic and current events forums, interactive exercises, and oral sessions via Skype.

The preparation included initial contact and needs identification through a detailed questionnaire. The organization into intensive sessions with active tutoring ensures learner follow-up and motivation.

Collaborative work is regulated by homogeneous groups and is subject to formative and summative evaluation. Forums encourage information exchange, while interactive exercises with automated assessment complement individual learning.

Skype sessions develop oral comprehension and production. Tutor-learner relationships, via forums, chats, and video conferences, are close and regular. The forums sometimes show low polyphony and an almost complete absence of code-switching, linked to the requirement to maintain French.

Mediated interactions reveal a rich written orality (emojis, expressive punctuation, self-portraits) and a varied discursive temporality (synchronous and asynchronous).

The training evaluation shows general progress among learners at level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference. Recommendations for improving the training concern, in particular, the prior training of learners in the collaborative approach and the good internal organization of groups.

English version of the article translated thanks to AI.

Source & Credits

Author: Hani Qotb

Original Article (PDF): https://theses.hal.science/tel-00335245/file/THESE_2008_FINALE._HALL.pdf

Add to favorites

Au seuil du 21ème siècle, la mondialisation impose le besoin croissant d’apprendre des langues étrangères spécialisées, notamment le Français sur Objectifs Spécifiques (FOS).
